🇮🇱🤝🇦🇲❌🇹🇷— Today, 28 June 2026, Israel's government cabinet unanimously recognized the Armenian genocide, during which the Turco-Ottoman Empire under the Young Turks Regime killed 1.5 million Armenian Christians.

➡️ In a move towards Historical Justice, Israel’s Cabinet unanimously approved a proposal on Sunday to designate the mass violence and ethnic cleansing against Armenians by the Ottoman Empire's Young Turks Regime during World War I as a genocide.

➡️ The step, which still needs approval in Parliament, reflects the already deteriorating ties between Israel and Turkey.

🇹🇷 Turkey has fiercely lobbied to prevent countries from officially recognizing the mass deaths of Armenians around 1915 as a genocide, even as Armenians have pushed for it.

⚰️ As noted by the AP, Historians estimate that up to 1.5 million Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turks around the time of World War I, an event widely viewed by scholars as the first genocide of the 20th century.

🤓 Turkey denies that the deaths constituted genocide, saying the toll has been inflated and that those killed were victims of civil war and unrest.

🇮🇱🤝🇦🇲❌🇹🇷— Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar:

It's never too late to do the right thing.

I thank Israeli Prime-Minister Netanyahu for his support, and the government ministers for their unanimous approval of the resolution I initiated for Israel's recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

Thus, Israel joins 32 countries that have fulfilled a moral duty by recognizing the historical truth, and rejecting attempts to deny it.
