Shakira acquitted of tax fraud, court orders Spain to hand back $70 million - By Reuters - May 18, 2026

Some guy on X wrote:

"The Spanish tax authority will have to give back €60 millions to Shakira. Spain’s National Court has reportedly annulled Shakira’s 2011 tax case, ruling that she has never committed tax fraud.
Think about that for a second. A tax authority can accuse you of fraud, drag you through years of legal hell, force payments, destroy your reputation globally… and the case should never have existed in the first place. The main problem in some countries is not just high taxes, but:- retroactive interpretations- unclear rules- presumption of guilt- endless bureaucracy"

Like WTF???!!!

So, no executions for the "agents/prosecutors"?🙄

They announced they would appeal... "The tax agency said it would appeal to the Supreme Court and no payment will be made until the final ruling." 😡

WTF? Aren't those judgments immediately enforceable? 🙄
Hurry, go seize the furniture at the tax office and their bank account!
Or guess what... they can do that against you, but you can't do it to them, even when a judge says you're right!
Mark these words. It works this way in almost all the big EU countries. You can't win.
And when you win, you do the math, and you'll see you lost something. The "full compensation for the damage" is BS when the criminal is the state. It will never pay for it's action in full.

Why does it work this way? Aren't those democracies??? 🤣

nah, they'll get promoted over this... as the hacienda employees that got bonuses for this... and guess who'll pay all of this 🙁

What scares me is that regular Joes doesn't care about it as they don't ever imagine how corrupted and crazy are some agency and laws.
They just get the "Oh, she won, so it's fine, everything works perfectly", but they don't even imagine the mess she's been through, the money spent to pay lawyers and accountants for all these years, and the troubles that will continue for years to come.
Heck read the year of the tax case, 2011! 😳

Just as a reminder when you dream of relocating your global business to Costa del Sol... don't do it, don't give them any excuse to ruin your life, they are paid for it...
read this about their bonuses:

This is the true fine. The message they transmitted was "don't cheat on your taxes." The message that was received is "don't come here."

Also, though this doesn't apply to Shakira, think many people make the mistake of believing that because everything is slow/broken in Spanish governance that they can come there and fade into the ether and obscurity. What they fail to take note of, is the one efficient and competent process the Spanish government has funneled their energies into is Hacienda. Of course this is true of governments most anywhere, the quickest way to get their attention is to be a tasty prospect for the tax authorities.

The other thing Spanish governance excels at is luring fugitives into a false sense of security. The fact they let the petty criminal have a pass because it isn't profitable doesn't mean they don't aggressively and competently pursue action when opportunity presents itself. John McAfee learned this the hard way; their lax treatment of low-level fugitives arguably is beneficial in their pursuit of gathering high-value persons for foreign government.
