This is already reality in Denmark for years, called nemID and now MitID. Nothing new, only that the rest of Europe is moving forward these steps while it has been tested in Denmark for years with great success.

UK is really old-school when it comes to paperwork, many folks don't have passports, some don't have any proof of ID except gas bill.

Europe is rife with digital ID, it makes no difference at this point, your phon and other electronics not to mention continuous CCTV monitoring and meta data collection from devices using various methods e.g., cell towers, wifi network, bluetooth, RFC, are all already tracking you. I welcome digital ID programs, it makes things faster and most importantly will make it harder for illegals and migrants.

I think there is a lot of irony in all these discussions.
We already had the id card discussion in the UK years back. People were upset. I did not get why. It makes a lot of sense to have id cards for European use. The passport is bulky and easily gets torn and broken. Also it can be stamped. The id card is convenient and durable. Would be much better than a passport, no country no bank can flip to see where you went. I don't like the RBS lady who was supposed to copy the bio page but then copied all my Chinese visa.
I understand that the rule must be the same for passports and cards, namely that you cannot be forced to have one, neither by the bank nor the government.
Now this discussion. Just make it not mandatory. You NIN is in the system anyways.
But what is very strange about all this is what there are many countries with all those cards like Switzerland where government control is much more relaxed than the notorious US and UK where passports are a rare thing and people usually carry bulky brith certificates to government offices.

ID cards in the UK will be useless for international travel because of Brexit.
So the only use will be internal and British already have (provisional) driving licences for that - a plastic card that anyone over 15 years and 9 months can get. It also has your address, so works perfectly as a proof of identity for any bank.
The thing is that in the UK you are not legally required to have any sort of ID document and definitely not required to carry one at all times. But making it "digital" is a first step to total ID control that starts with banking, goes all way up to travel and movement and ends up in discriminating anyone who is labeled as a "public enemy". So basically anyone who dares to have an opinion different from current agenda.
It is entirely a choice of UK. Many id cards work to enter Turkey, even expired ones. It is up to UK to negotiate relevant treaties.
Yes, I know that. But the reasoning is absolutely wrong. If you look at the US, UK, AU without IDs, they are amongst the most motherf* countries in what "public enemies" are converned. The US is about to introduce national no fly lists and bullsh* the like at a completely unprecedented level. And at the same time, you have places like Estonia and Switzerland where ID cards are common place. Nobody in Switzerland is forced to have one, nobody can be forced to carry one.
The card is not the problem. It is the mentality, the government and the police that is the problem. And that is where you need to opt for a change. Why was Assange in a prison in UK for so long? It was not that it had to be that way. There was enough leeway for a whole range of prime ministers and Queens, Kings, Princes and Princesses that had enough power to end this. But they did not want to.
The card is an instrument of control. Assange is irrelevant, US prosecutors have more power in the UK than locals, it's a well known fact. Unfortunately, Brits are no longer able to change the course of history, so the government will get more and more aligned with left totalitarian ideology. And with mass migration and the general decline in people's income level there is no way to reverse it. Venezuela on Thames in 20-30 years max.

You forgot using it to go online and view adult material etc. It will likely also require use to post on social media websites to prevent online abuse etc. It is a slippery slope into a dystopian world.

We didn't have ID because people realized the issue with the state having so much control and information from the n**i era - the current system has many walls / checks and balances - you only have to look to the EU to see what happens when those walls / checks and balances are removed - asset reporting et al

There are certain type of people who will keep telling how bad GB is, but they will still prefer their UK passports to SEA/Africa countries etc. and we all know why. No one stopping them from becoming citizens of another country they love so much and giving up their British citizenship. It's not that difficult to renounce someone British citizenship.
What has been in possession of a British passport got to do with how bad Britain is as a functioning society/country?
If you are British and UK goes down, it bothers you. If you are British and China goes down, you probably either don't care or (if you are UK politician/media) release some statement telling all the British, how bad China is, while silently implying what great personality you are.
We all know that the Brits are not that bad. But it still hurts to see something like this. Of course, it hurts me as much as you. But, let's be realistic:
- The card is not the issue. The card adds a lot of convenience and makes a lot of bulls like the CitizenCard obsolete.
- The loss of privacy is an issue, but still the card is again not the problem. There are many countries with better privacy that have cards and many countries like the US without cards that have horrible privacy problems.
- You cannot negate that the many "foreigners and idiots" in the UK are causing porblems to society and values are going down the drain. (We all know that the horrible politics partnered with horrible citizens make the country a living hell with sky high taxes and no social wellfare. But...) what do you politicians expect to do when there are riots on the streets from people calling for more safety and less fraudsters and other sort of idiots in the country? Do you think they will see the problem, lower the taxes and look for wealthier people to come? Of course not, they will promise the people what they want: safety and introduce cards.
