Very easy
For VPN you can use Mullvad. pay with XMR, no email needed.

For the node, download the official monero GUI wallet from Downloads
After install select "local node". It will take a couple of days to download the blockchain but after that you are good to go.
You will need a few hundred GB of disk space, at present my node is taking up 204GB.

Is there also any additional advantage of using an OS like tails to not leave any traces? I do not know how much fingerprinting can impact the secrecy?

Tails was discussed a few times already, it is indeed a great way putting up an extra security layer on your cyber privacy. I use tails on an USB device.

There is a great article which I learned from in mentor group gold

Anonymous Operating System
Be careful what you post over the Internet, check all the permissions associated with a new application when you install it, use an ad blocker, dump your home assistant and so on. Services like Office 366, Google and Dropbox scan everything you write, receive or upload. When these services see what you do, you do not have to be a genius to realize that your government is watching as well.

These are a few basic tips you can rely on to ensure your privacy over the Internet, but there is a long way to go from privacy to anonymity. Even so, anonymity embraces multiple forms...

Before that I didn't knew about it. Even the article is old it is still valid and a amazing guide for setting it up.

Tails really is amazing, but reading the previous posts here in the thread and that way chain analysis was performed in the link suggests that using tails would have no impact for Monero. Am I wrong?

The advantage of using Tails is that your computer can't be traced, and if you set up at an internet café or a public library, you're invisible online as long as you wear a hoodie and maybe even a fake beard. The transactions themselves, of course, can still be tracked and have nothing to do with Tails.

But if you use a VPN or run your own node, the IP cannot be connected to you. Is there still an advantage of using Tails for Monero transactions?

I would recommend you to read this thread - it went totally off from the securing of the lenovo to securing your entire cyber life 😀 But it is good reading and can answer some of your questions.

Thread 'Seeking Expert Advice for Securing My New Lenovo Laptop'

Sep 14, 2024
I have just ordered the latest and largest laptop from Lenovo - it comes with fingerprint security and is also supposed to be able to scan your eyes before granting access to the valuable stuff on the PC.

It's coming directly from China to me. I assume there are no authorities or anyone else who can tamper with the PC before I receive it. Therefore, one should be able to assume that this piece of hardware is untouched!

What would you do first? Windows 11 is a must for me, unfortunately, I'm not a techie and can't install Linux or anything like that.

My plan is, of course, to set up a...

Thread 'What tool can encrypt a laptop's data instantly when it's closed, and how do you set it up?'

May 18, 2024
I watched a TV show last night about a business owner in India who travels around Europe selling illegal medicine. When he was caught at London airport, he was sitting with his laptop but managed to close it.

At that moment, the entire machine was encrypted with 32-bit encryption, as they said in the show, and neither the police nor MI5 could open the computer without his password, which they never got.

What tool is that, and how do you set it up so that it locks the computer and encrypts all data the moment you close your laptop?

Tails might be a good choice if you don't want to run your own node. You could just connect to a remote node and your identity would be concealed by Tor. Double check that though as I have never used XMR on tails.

Yes tails is less susceptible to fingerprinting so would be better for privacy.
