It depends on what you are looking for. A lot is about anonymity and discussions you would not want to see on Google otherwise. But I think that's not the main point about mentor gold. You get a much better inbox and you can advertise your services as well.
I think you should look at it from another perspective. You can get mentor gold to show apreciation for the people here willing to answer your questions that lawyers otherwise would charge you $1000 per hour and then not even be responsible when they were wrong. Here, you have a team of very cool guys willing to help you out, even then the questions are ridiculous. And they are your friends. Which lawyer ever was your friend?
Yes, you've made a good point here. A lawyer is only your friend as long as you keep paying. If you run out of money, they'll drop you like a hot potato.

Don't make this mistake, lawyers are never your friends, even while you are paying them. They can and will snitch, and do other nasty things. Use them for what you need, tell them the bare minimum, and then run away.

If someone think a lawyer can be a friend and at the same time do his work right he is very wrong.
That said I agree, you get a lot of benefits with your mentor group gold membership and you become part of a society that shares information worth thousands of dollars but can't be found anywhere nor with a lawyer or accountant.
