They are correct approximately once per decade and are wrong 99% of the time, but they generate lots of attention because "the system will crash" is a very appealing message to some people.
They usually make money not by investing and have︀ no published track record, but by selling books (and by getting commissions on pitching Gold︁ to gullible readers).
