I believe that one should not express a personal opinion about another person’s appearance when that opinion is neither requested nor positive. This includes comments such as: you look much older than a year ago, the aesthetic surgery you had spoiled your look, your new hair colour does not suit you, and similar remarks.
This is not about limiting freedom of expression, but about maintaining a positive and respectful tone in a conversation. Why not express only something positive (provided it is sincere) and keep negative comments (if any) to oneself? This does not mean that people should exchange only superficial compliments, but unsolicited personal opinions about someone’s appearance can easily spoil that person’s mood, even if they are not taken too seriously, without bringing anything useful in return.
Only the person him/herself can decide how they want to look. What truly matters is how that person feels; the goal is certainly not to be liked or approved of by others.
