This is why I extensively study cycles in history (political cycles, economic cycles, war cycles, etc.). Human nature dictates that societies make the same mistakes over-and-over again. They never learn from history, even from fairly recent history. One of my favorites, which occurred a mere 23 years after WWII:
Senator Thomas J. Dodd, who acquired the German text of the n**i Weapons Law during his time at Nuremberg war crime trials, personally owned a copy of the original German text︀ of the n**i Weapons Law. He had it translated and believed that it was a︁ good idea to enact into law in the U.S. The deaths of Robert F. Kennedy︂ and Martin Luther King (never let a serious crisis go to waste) created the emotional︃ leverage needed to pass the law.
