And it once was one of the richest countries (gdp per capita). Among the best examples ever of natural resources and financial mismanagement due to shortsightedness.

Politicians and governments can truly do their best to ruin a country's economy in their pursuit of lining their own pockets.
it doesn't have to be only powered by greed - people don't generally understand that regulation (not to be confused with voluntary standardization) of any kind creates inflationary pressures - even the best intentions in the name of greater good have devastating effect if installed by coercion
