How to become tax resident in Thailand? (I got rejected)

Curious, you must replace your current‍ driver license with a Thai one if you live there right, you can't keep your current license?

I don't‍ think you need to replace it. You can have both at the same time. Having the IDL allows you to get the Thai license without any tests. I will try⁤ to get my Thai license in the coming weeks.

I have‍ a Thai license, If you reside in Thailand or own a vehicle in Thailand you pretty much need a Thai license not International...

Also home countries licenses are not legal,⁤ international is, but the insurance won't likely cover some things after a certain period of⁣ time.

I confirm this works as I said. I have just done it today.

I went with a Thai⁤ friend and they were giving me a hard time to get a TIN with the⁣ Elite Visa and asking for stupid things. Then I told my friend to show them⁢ my bank statement from last year where the bank withheld tax on the interest they︀ paid me in my saving accounts. And I told my friend to say that "I︁ was NOT a tax resident last year in Thailand and I want to claim back︂ the tax on the interest, and they have to issue a TIN in order to︃ do that". Long story short (there are more stupid things they wanted to do): they︄ gave it to me. I took my lease contract with me since they require an︅ address in Thailand...

You also need to go to your bank so they give you︆ a document for the tax office that shows the interest paid in the year and︇ the withheld amount. It took me only a couple of minutes in a branch by︈ the tax office.

the usual mess.
Looks like‍ joining crs and doing that tax crap changes stopped the sweet sweet dolla flowing freely 😉
Instead of increasing revenue, they might be already sitting at a substantial loss.
Their stock⁤ market already implying it, with mainly (agricultural) commodities doing well (which are not really reflective⁣ of the internal economy) while other ones more indicative of internal dynamics being down at⁢ the same time.

Who could have guessed that happening?

All those newly registered elite visa holders must be feeling pretty silly right now.

Som nam-naa

well wouldn't‌ call that premature death which has been done before more of a u turn.
Id call for a price cut or they add a few goodies like tax free status‍ or path to citizenship or smth.

Not sure it’s a death per se - my visa for example I rock up once a⁤ year to immigration and they affix a new stamp for another 12 months - they⁣ do all the paperwork also.

Even investor visa doesn’t have that - and I’ve had⁢ that.

First time in nearly two decades of using︁ the expression in writing - thanks for correcting me

Looks like some misunderstood this new DTV visa, it's not a 5-year visa, it's a‌ 180-day visa that can be used within 5 years after approved. After being used twice,‍ the visa expires:

The DTV visa does NOT allow “any” digital nomad to stay in Thailand for five years, as incorrectly noted by some media. To be clear, once⁤ obtained, it can be used within a five year period, for 180 days, and extended⁣ once for another 180 days, with a 10,000 Baht filing fee each time. After being⁢ used twice, the DTV visa would expire. As stated, additional requirements will be released in︀ the near future by the Thai government and are subject to change.

(Thai Government︁ Introduces Destination Thailand Visa for Digital Nomads and Long-Term Workers - The Pattaya News).

What I will say is I fail to see how︂ Thailand can get itself out of its position - within my collective circle at the︃ high end of the NW basket everyone is saying the same - living in Thailand︄ is like living in an open air prison with increasing surveillance and control mechanisms as︅ well as a continual open hatred to foreigners.

A LOT of my friends are looking︆ at the Caribbean and just having Thailand as a 3 month haunt annually - note︇ all marked and with sizable amounts laid out on the country.

It’s been going down︈ hill for the past few years since Anutin and Big Joke rocked up , the︉ first now having heart issues after vaccines and the latter being investigated for money laundering︊ involved with illegal gambling - but the Government hasn’t started to roll back the s**t︋ they brought in.

What countries in the Caribbean exactly? It's hard to beat Thailand when︄ you look at the combination of well developed infrastructure, little to no taxes, safety, weather,︅ etc., and I'd say its main competitors are in the region (Malaysia and Vietnam).

It not being my center of life⁣ but just a part thereof me not investing my life wealth there, I don't perceive⁢ it as such.
I largely see widespread and all-encompassing incompetence in the gov sector for︀ the few interactions i have with them anyway. So I cannot think of them achieving︁ something really tangible compared to hard working cultures like German or Chinese or Japanese for︂ that matter, where Im more scared of the increasing surveillance as the people generally work︃ hard, while Im not worried at all in other non-hardworking cultures.
Seen stuff in Africa︄ while they are having high tech biometrics even for driving license, but de facto its︅ a bunch of nonsense.

Agree to this notion. Its indeed a good idea to limit︌ stay for max 6 months.

Lets hope they turn around and embrace the (past) Singapore︍ spirit more. Maybe the upcoming easing of the visa system indicates this? (might also indicates︎ big joke being largely neutralized as he was a driver of the anti-foreigner wave).

Two good spots. Id add Indonesia to it and also to some degree, the Philippines (its not Malaysia tho).
