As wrote many times, stereotypes. Actually, US is way more dangerous for common people. Just avoid Sinaloa and drug-related spots - and business! - and you will stay ok, Mexico City is quiet nice and safe.

Yep, I have been all over. No problems, of course there's some hustlers, but mostly nice and friendly people. Even Sinaloa or other "hot spots" that I have been to. Just don't flash your gold Rolex (except those areas like Polanco). No doubt it's better to avoid certain areas or states, that goes for many countries in the world. Overall Mexico has a great potential with decent transportation, shopping, entertainment, nature. Lots of good international flight connections via Mexico City and Cancun.

How much do we need to show?

Exact qualifications differ by consulate, so you should confirm all the requirements, especially the estimated financial amounts, with the specific consulate that you intend to use.
But temporary residency in Mexico is still a great option for those who are not retired, but want want to relocate to Mexico, or who simply want access to a great Plan B location, just in case. Like permanent residency, there are two options to prove financial solvency to be granted temporary residency. Either show bank balances and investments equivalent to 5,000 days of Mexican minimum wage (currently ~$36,000), or an income equivalent to 300 days of Mexican minimum wage per month (currently ~$2,170).
