I found this link
https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360011069619-Extended-public-key?docs=true
on the forum and thought it was a good idea to use the method to share my wallet with the tax office without giving them access to it. I want to pay the taxes that apply for my crypto holdings, that's not up for discussion. But is it safe to share my link as they say in the above guide?

Do you want a total anonymous company with bank account? Get a step by step guide on how to do that here, it only requires mentor group gold.

It should be okay to share the xpub with the tax office, but would they know how to use it? It would be better to just give them the coin-specific public key instead of xpub.

You can independently check a ledger wallet only through xpub. The ledger normal addresses cannot be displayed properly for technical reasons (good for privacy)

How do you read a XPUB address, is there software to be downloaded or how does it works for the 3rd party to read it?

No I don't need it for the tax man, for other purpose. But yeah, for OP it's relevant comment.

Ledger Live has ZenLedger, it does your taxes for you. Speaking from experience, you give them the xpub and they will run around their office like a headless chicken because they have no idea what they're doing when crypto comes into play.
