Swedish authorities are investigating suspected election fraud surrounding the election of Mohamed Abdukardir Ali, who just got his Swedish citizenship in February, and Ahmed Abas Omar, both Somali-born candidates for Sweden’s far-left Left Party who unexpectedly won enough personal votes to enter the Swedish Parliament and Borlänge Municipal Council respectively.

Ali was only ninth on the Left Party’s electoral list in Dalarna, a region in central Sweden, but received 648 personal votes, allowing him to leapfrog the party’s No. 1 candidate, sitting MP and climate-policy spokesperson Kajsa Fredholm, and take the party’s only parliamentary seat in the constituency.

Omar was only sixth on the Left Party’s list for the Borlänge Municipal Council but is on course to win a seat through personal votes.

The investigations are examining suspected “improper influence on voting.”

According to Swedish media reports, an anonymous complaint alleged that voters were transported from migrant areas to early-voting locations and supplied with Left Party ballots on which candidates had already been personally marked.

Police surveillance material reportedly includes pre-marked ballots, vehicles transporting voters and documented cash withdrawals.

Investigators also have images showing a person handing voters money and ballots.
