Democratic Republic of Congo authorities released 15 prisoners and handed them over to AFC/M23 rebels on Friday, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross, which facilitated the transfer. Reuters said this was the first known prisoner handover under last year’s agreement aimed at ending fighting in eastern Congo.
The transfer marks an initial implementation step under the deal reached last year to reduce conflict in the east of the country.
