New photographs of Indian Captain Smit Machchhar reveal extensive scars and surgical staples across his head following the September 30 terrorist attack aboard FlyDubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

The pilot suffered a severe skull fracture requiring major surgery after his Omani co-pilot repeatedly struck him with an emergency axe. Machchhar also sustained serious injuries to his hand while defending himself and continues to recover.

Despite his injuries, he managed to unlock the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to overpower the attacker and save 174 passengers.
