🚗👤❌👺 — Former Binance CEO Chaipeng Zhao announces that the outflows “look like a hack" on X:
User funds are safe!

It does look like a hack on Binance. Appreciate the quick freeze from Tether (~$971m) and Circle (~$823m).

I don't manage Binance (.com) anymore, but as a shareholder, I expect all user funds will be fully covered.

🇰🇵👺 ❌🚗👤 — Blockchain intelligence company, TRM Labs, attributes today's Binance hack to TraderTraitor, North Korean Intellligence State-sponsored hacking unit.

📝 This is based on on-chain and off-chain intelligence, and the firm has come to this conclusion with "high confidence".

At 20:05 UTC on October 29, approximately USD 6.36 billion began moving out of Binance wallets across ten blockchains, most of it in about 20 minutes. It is the largest crypto theft on record, roughly four times the Bybit hack of February 2025.

TRM Labs attributes the attack to TraderTraitor, North Korea’s elite state-sponsored hacking unit, based on robust on-chain and off-chain intelligence. The same group was named by the FBI in the Bybit hack, and the staging, the Tornado Cash funding and the pre-signed transactions all match earlier North Korea-linked heists.

The response has been fast. Tether, Circle, Ripple, World Liberty Financial and Arbitrum’s Security Council have frozen roughly USD 2.7 billion. But the attacker still controls about USD 2.4 billion in assets beyond any issuer’s reach, and is racing to convert and move them.

TRM continues to work with Binance and the Beacon Network to track the funds and alert partners in real time. The story is still developing, and we will share more as the investigation unfolds.

🇰🇵👺 ❌🚗👤 — Binance announces that estimated total impact from North Korean hackings sits at around $6.3B, with ~$3 billion frozen on-chain so far:
Binance's initial investigation suggests that the security incident may involve a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, which allowed an attacker to gain access to a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. We have found no evidence of any wallet private key leak. We will share a detailed technical post-mortem once the investigation is complete and the facts are fully verified.

The estimated total impact sits at around $6.3B. We have worked with blockchain partners to freeze affected assets, with ~$3 billion frozen on-chain so far.
Binance will cover all losses from the SAFU fund and the company’s funds. User funds are safe. We will also publish an updated Proof of Reserves once the remediation is complete.

As an immediate precaution, Binance has:

- temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while security checks are completed;
- revoked the affected address authorisation;
- engaged law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners to trace and recover funds.

Our teams are working around the clock to resolve this issue safely and thoroughly. We are working closely with our law enforcement partners to confirm the identity of these criminals and bring them to justice.

🇰🇵👺 ❌🚗👤 — ZachXBT suspects Lazarus behind Binance hack

➡️ Well-known on-chain tracking blogger ZachXBT speculates that the perpetrator behind this attack on Binance, which stole $5.875 billion, is the Reconnaissance General Bureau of the North Korean People's Army's General Staff Department, which manages the subordinate Lazarus Group.

➡️ The organization's track record of thefts in this field

🇯🇵 Japan's DMM Exchange, approximately $300 million
🇮🇳 India's WazirX Exchange, approximately $230 million
🇨🇳 Chinese Bybit Exchange, approximately $1.5 billion
🇨🇳 On-chain protocol Kelp DAO, approximately $292 million
🇨🇳 Chinese Bitget Exchange, approximately $380 million

📝 Although Binance has recovered half of the assets, Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the like pose recovery challenges. The hacker's ultimate goal is to funnel the assets into North Korea to bolster national construction.
