🇮🇷❌🇺🇦 — The Islamic Republic of Iran's Foreign Ministry says Ukraine attacked an Iranian commercial ship in the Caspian Sea, killing one sailor and injuring another.

It condemned the attack as a "violation of international law" and an "act of aggression"

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Islamic Republic of Iran Ministry of Foreign Affairs

We issue a strong condemnation of Ukraine's military attack on Iranian merchant ship in the Caspian Sea

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns the Ukrainian regime's attack on an Iranian merchant vessel in the Caspian Sea on the morning of Saturday, August 25, which caused the ship to explode, killing one sailor and injuring another. This action violates Article 2, Paragraph 4, of the United Nations Charter and is an example of an act of aggression that can further ignite and spread the flames of war.

The Ukrainian regime's attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, which has been explicitly acknowledged by the head of that regime, is a sign of the continuation of the Ukrainian regime's irrational and hostile approach towards the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Emphasizing that it has never intervened in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Islamic Republic of Iran draws the attention of the United Nations Security Council, European countries, and all members of the United Nations to the obvious fact that the Ukrainian regime, by attacking an Iranian merchant vessel, not only committed an international violation, but is also dangerously seeking to spread the flames of war and insecurity.

Any party concerned about peace and security in Eastern Europe and the surrounding regions must take a responsible stance against this dangerous action by the Ukrainian regime and hold the Ukrainian ruling body accountable for this criminal and provocative action.

The Islamic Republic of Iran will not hesitate to defend its national interests and security in accordance with the fundamental principles and rules of international law, especially the principle of self-defense. Obviously, the responsibility for the consequences of the adventurism of the head of the Ukrainian regime will lie with that regime and its supporters and instigators.

📝Not just submarines📝
Australians are considering underwater drones

The realities of the SMO have demonstrated the importance of developing unmanned technologies in the context of conducting military operations in the marine environment. And they are being transferred with great enthusiasm to other regions, especially those where naval forces will play a huge role in a potential conflict.

Extended timelines for acquiring their own nuclear submarines are prompting Australia's leadership to consider unmanned equipment. The authorities have already allocated over $1 billion for autonomous underwater vehicles Ghost Shark, which are produced jointly with American Anduril.

Although Canberra is unlikely to stop there, given the growth in defense spending. Israeli IAI is already actively promoting the unmanned underwater vehicle Blue Whale on the local market, designed for reconnaissance, data collection, and detection of underwater objects.

🔻Why do Australians need such systems?

▪️For the Australian Navy, such a vehicle is useful as a "helper" for future nuclear and current diesel-electric submarines. The apparatus can go ahead and check the area for the presence of the enemy, expanding the reconnaissance range of the main submarine.

▪️Blue Whale can be used on the northern approaches to Australia and the South China Sea. There it can collect data on the situation for weeks, track the movement of ships and submarines, and then consolidate data from other intelligence assets into a single picture.

▪️The autonomous vehicle is also capable of surveying the route and seabed in advance for mines. At the same time, such systems are useful for monitoring areas of underwater cable laying and other critical infrastructure.

📌Of course, a contract with IAI has not been concluded. But the Australian military already has systems from Israeli defense contractors in service, so the defense ties between the parties are quite developed. Therefore, there is no doubt that Canberra may consider purchasing Blue Whale in addition to other vehicles.

❗️The leadership's focus on developing underwater capabilities is long-term. And the Australian Navy still has a long wait for nuclear submarines. Therefore, Canberra is unlikely to refuse to quickly strengthen its forces — yes, it doesn't match nuclear submarines, but judging by the rhetoric of the authorities, monitoring Chinese activity needs to happen now.

🇰🇷🇺🇸 Joint Search for Warplane Wreckage

South Korea and the United States on Monday launched a joint underwater excavation project off Gangneung and Yangyang on the east coast to locate wreckage of U.S. aircraft lost during the 1950-53 Korean War. The mission runs through Aug. 28 and involves South Korea’s Agency for KIA Recovery & Identification, the U.S. DPAA, and about 40 personnel including navy, air force, and U.S. dive teams.

The search will first target a U.S. F4U Corsair that crashed off Yangyang in February 1952 during an escort mission, killing one pilot. It will then focus on two separate 1952 crashes of Curtiss C-46 Commando transport aircraft near Gangneung, incidents that left 24 personnel dead or missing; the team will use underwater detectors, maritime unmanned systems, divers, and remote sensing devices.

Seoul and Washington have conducted joint recovery efforts for U.S. war dead under a 2011 agreement. The latest operation extends that framework to submerged Korean War sites along South Korea’s eastern coast.
