Hello all - I am trying to provide some help for a friend from the UK. He decided to leave his homeland rather than continue to pay his greedy ex-wife (who cheated on him) more child maintenance. For background, he is good man. He had already been paying for years, already gave his Ex millions GBP to live on (so his 2 children are set for life). But the divorce laws are such that he is stuck still paying her for another decade. And he has had enough. So he left.

As a man of fairly significant means, he is trying to decide what country / countries might be best to settle in so that he won't have extradition or similar issues should his Ex try to come after him through international legal channels. Does anyone have any experience / advice with this sort of issue? Thank you.

Hi, I live in the United Kingdom and I'm looking to get married soon. While I trust my partner, the divorce rate here is high and the courts are often not fair so looking to mitigate my risk. Me and my partner do not live together.

At the moment I only have crypto (relativly easy to protect) but in next year I'm looking to purchase real estate in the UK and start a contracting business.

What is the best way to protect these assets, especially from divorce? I'm looking for something relativly cost effective as the value of my assets is not huge but not small.

I live in Australia, a country where women are superior to men in the family court.

I am in a defacto relationship with my current girlfriend since 2012, and we have a 1 year old kid together.

Our relationship was never very good, lots of up and downs, and since I am a wealthy online business owner, I'd like to set up a strategy
to save my financial assets and business in case of a split up.

I'm 100% happy to pay child support and support my child, however, I am not willing to give any percentage of my business or financial assets (money from my personal
and business accounts)...

Hi gurus, asking for a dear friend of mine. He sees a divorce coming, not started yet. The main issue is that he is a good worker and entrepreneur, so he has a good reserve. While wife didn't contribute much, not even looking after family. So sharing all in half doesn't seem fair. Any steps anyone can suggest to save some pot somewhere, ot make things a bit more fair?

Thank you! I have looked at these. And as is written in one of them, the time to plan for this sort of thing is well before it happens. Unfortunately for my friend, he arrived at his current conclusion that "enough is enough" too late.
So now that he is on the far side of the planning stages (he has already handled his finances into crypto, so the dangers are less there) and now he is trying to figure out where he should physically park himself for a while to both avoid unwanted legal challenges whilst also enjoying a good quality of life, utilizing his crypto as needed, etc.
 
In other words, he is already divorced and the UK court ruled how much support he is supposed to pay? Now, he wants to stop paying without having to fear too much legal action? Both UK citizens or any foreign background?

Any job / business he needs to take care of physically? Which country?

Any personal preference for climate, culture, etc?

Correct on all fronts.
He is essentially retired at this point, so fortunately for him no active business needs. He is looking for a country or countries to bounce between to "stay off the grid" without having to actually stay off the grid (ie, live in a cabin in the woods with no utilities, that is not for him.)
He doesn't need an extravagant lifestyle, just basic luxuries of 1st world nations (good internet, TV, take-away food) would be nice, if possible. He would prefer a nation with warmer climate, non-US / EEA.
Flexible on culture preference, would prefer English at least somewhat spoken, at least in larger cities. But is willing to learn new languages.
He is quite libertarian, doesn't care what others do/say/think as long as he is left alone. Does not care about guns or religion.

He realizes he may have to sacrifice some of these preferences in order to live in a nation that, should the tentacles of the UK government find him, the local government would not be inclined to assist with any legal or extradition actions they may attempt.

He recently received a second citizenship in St. Kitts (at least he planned ahead a little!) but because it is a former UK holding, he does not feel comfortable that he would be safe there.
 
South Africa, Thailand, Bali, Philippines, Panama. Even Japan, Taiwan could be an option. Or ask @JohnnyDoe about the Dominican Republic.

What is probably the best option in this case is to rent / buy a couple of houses in different countries on somebody else's name. If he is living 3 months in each without the need to register locally. It is just much more difficult to find people when they move every couple of months.
 
You don't even need to go that far, check out with a lawyer in Switzerland & Montenegro - both are ouside of the EU and most often you can hide there without big hassle if you don't tell anyone where you are! When you exit your current country, just give them a virtual address you can find on the internet for instant in Portugal, Bulgaria or even Ukraine, they won't check that before you are gone anyway.

Has been working fine for me the last years, no one know where am I 😀

Thank you! Would you suggest he use his second passport to establish himself in one of these areas outside the EU? Or do you think he will be fine still using his UK passport?

Also what would he be asking the lawyers? I imagine they could help him protect assets, but since his assets are already protected, do you know any who would actively help someone "disappear"?

Thank you. His second passport is harmful? Should I tell him never to use it? Or are you just saying in general, it doesn't help.

Harm was done when he obtained it. Now he can keep it in a drawer and avoid telling about it. Nobody will believe he is a native St. Kittian anyway, and in his situation he doesn't want to be asked too many questions.

Montenegro, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Dominican Republic are part of The Hague Convention on the International Recovery of Child Support and Other Forms of Family Maintenance . Op should definitely avoid countries on this list .
South Africa is also not an option because of the Reciprocal Enforcement of Maintenance Orders (REMO) Act . (https://www.justice.gov.za/brochure/20100825_maintenance.pdf).
OP's friend should definitely avoid any commonwealth countries as most have signed a REMO or a legal assistance act .
Even if the government in some of these countries is broken . That doesn't mean that it plays into your hands as she can just pay someone to "accelerate" it and use the "brokenness" against you .

Thank you very much. So have we figured out any nations that might work for him outside of BRIC nations? Or is his only hope to keep moving every few months - or only stay somewhere until legal action is filed, then move, rinse, repeat?

These countries are not covered by the hague convention, remo or mla agreement :
  • Cambodia
  • Indonesia
  • Laos
