Canary islands? Why not just do Caribbean?

In winter is not that warm there. You cannot swim in the sea. Not much difference of South of Europe in winter

In Caribbean you have almost same nice weather year round

I am wondering what would be a nice tropical place to live for someone looking for high quality of life - meaning real estate in decent quality, safety, nice restaurants, good flight connections, interesting people, OK healthcare (or short flight to better healthcare).
It seems like most tropical places have rather poor infrastructure outside of the tourist resorts, people are poor, real estate is mostly low quality.

But maybe I'm wrong?

I used to be a big fan, but recently started liking Bangkok more.

Not necessarily, but poor, uneducated locals = not interesting.
In Bangkok, for example, you can find lots of entrepreneurs. But there's no beach.
I'm still thinking that the UAE probably has the best combination of interesting people, good infrastructure and beaches, but the air quality isn't great and real estate is overpriced.

It depends on your budget and on your organization skills.

Not sure what that means.

I actually haven't been to the Philippines yet - mostly because I associate it with trash, poverty and crime. But maybe I should give it a try.

I'm particularly wondering about places like Carribean islands or the Seychelles here.
Since SBF lived in the Bahamas, it can't be all that bad? And @Martin Everson lives there as well, according to his posts.

Have you considered Mauritius? Anyone have any experience with residing there (temp or perm)?

No Amazon, no Uber, no Glovo. Many “uneducated” people. Not for you.

Or Fiji. Are you just picking random islands?

Good example of an interesting, educated person. Btw, The Bahamas are much more than Old Fort Bay.

but you would still have to find him 😛

Ps Technically, half of the Bahamas is outside the tropics and the whole country is not in the Caribbean Sea.

Mauritius is not very different from Sri Lanka or India... just the sea (if it's something making any difference for you) is different/better, the rest is more or less the same... on the surface it tries to pretend to be "civilized", everything is actually of very low quality and nothing works seen through the lens of the European... yet some prefer this over the western luxury and rat race

I know there are a lot of people from the shipping industry moving there or opening offices, so the concentration of foreigners must be pretty high, which probably makes it easy to settle in quickly.

I lived in Mauritius for a couple of months about a decade ago. So I'm sure things have changed a bit. I was down in the Flic en Flac area which is a mix of locals and visitors. I enjoyed my time there. Good sunsets over the water most evenings.

There were what seemed like regular power outages once a week for a few hours. Didn't trust the water because I wasn't sure what the storage was like for the apartment complex. I try to avoid buying bottled water where possible and used a Steripen.

Beaches were good. I have seen some better and many a lot worse. Most were protected because of the reef. If you like kitesurfing the windy Le Morne area is good. I didn't notice too much rubbish compared to other islands. I'm looking at you Antigua! Yes there were a lot of dogs. Nothing aggressive, just plenty of them.

It was easy to spot the resort areas. Better quality roads, manicured gardens etc. I drove around the island and it's a good mix of areas. Didn't feel unsafe although I didn't do much exploring after dark. If you like developed country luxuries, perhaps look at the north around the Grand Baie area or find a resort and don't really leave there.

unorthodox take, since business etc has not been mentioned as a requirement:
go where you like the women most 😉
youtube and various apps help that decision process 😉

I don't know why you're all so obsessed with @Martin Everson , but I'm sure he has better things to do than hang out with OCT users, if he even actually lives in the Bahamas! Imagine if you meet a big guy pretending to be @Martin Everson , you believe him, and he takes you into a back alley to show you how “happy” he is to see you”¦

Bahamas and Mauritius do sound like amazing places, as long as you've got the money for it.

If money is your hope for independence you will never have it. The only real security that a man will have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience, and ability!

That is an unorthodox aproach. Usually men go after the biggest bisons (where they can make most money) and women follow. You are suggesting the opposite. That is prone to not end well.... 😉 😉 😉
