If you are just getting into the world of online businesses (also known as Internet marketing) stay away from the free hosting sites. Free hosting often comes as the expense of ads being placed on your site which can detract from the reason you have a website in the first place. Pay for hosting so you can control the content of your site.

Free hosting is only good if you are using it for some small stuff, using it for your corporate website or if you want to sell something isn't defiantly not the way to go... thats true..

Of course you are correct in your thinking on free web hosting. But not all sites places their ads on your site.Suppose you want to lunch your small online business then Google Blog is enough. It is a free hosting service providers without any ads in your page. But I agree, you have limited scope to design an attractive and well designed web page through free web hosting service providers.

Aside from those ads that you already mentioned they could also shut your business in no time. This usually happens to free hosting sites, so if you are serious about your business then better get a paid one.

So true, Free Hosting is for amateurs and I can't believe they are used as much any longer, you get get a $1 hosting with hostgator or b1 etc....

Free hosting is out of time, for years ago it was an option while hosting fees was killing all the small ones, today you can get hosting for as cheap as $3 / month no need for any free hosting at all any longer.
