Will Cyprus Join the Schengen Zone Soon?

"
Cyprus is resolving technical issues before joining the Schengen zone, the president said. Apart from it, only one country is not in the Schengen zone ”” EU member Ireland.

"We have resolved all political issues related to the ceasefire line [with the unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus], and are now working out the technical details necessary for accession," he said, noting that Cyprus, along with Ireland, are the last two EU countries not in the Schengen zone. Inclusion in it will be useful for the country in terms of tourism and investment, said the country's president, Nikos Christodoulides.

In December last year, the Cypriot authorities tightened visa requirements for Russians, making them similar to the Schengen ones. Among the main innovations is an increase in the period for considering a visa application to 15 days before departure to the country. Previously, documents could be accepted three to four days before departure, the Association of Tour Operators of Russia indicated. In addition, consular officers will need to provide an extract from the Russian Social Fund for the last ten years, bank statements with transactions for three months, as well as salary information for six months (previously, it was necessary for a month).

On January 1, Bulgaria and Romania fully entered the Schengen zone. From that moment, border control was abolished on land borders with these countries. From March 31, 2024, border control was abolished at sea and air borders.

Austria blocked the complete abolition of border control for almost two years, whose authorities feared the penetration of illegal migrants into the EU. In early December, the head of the Austrian Ministry of Internal Affairs announced that the country would lift its veto on the expansion of the Schengen agreement, noting that "migrants no longer pass" into the Schengen territory."

I'm interested. How is the Schengen zone linked to any form of dictatorship? Surely it's the opposite. A dictatorship wants to keep tabs on the population and control them. The Schengen zone makes it easier to travel and stay under the radar. I don't think that the EU is much different from other parts of the world.

Just look at what Cyprus has been forced to do in order to be allowed to join Schengen. For example with regards to the alignment on Russophobic policies.

Now I'm confused. How has any country been 'forced'? Many EU countries never wanted to be part of Schengen because it diluted their control on those arriving and leaving. Re. Russophobic, this only started after Putin invaded a sovereign country. Before he did this, Russian money was welcome everywhere.

This. Just don't invade countries. It's not that hard. Or if you invade, make sure you are a superpower like USA allowed to 🙂)

Agreed! The USA is hypocritical and will invade other countries. They are not perfect, definitely not innocent and have committed atrocities everywhere.
But one question: If you are given a choice of where to live, Russia or America? Or maybe Russia's friends, Iran or North Korea? 😉

Getting back from ideological debates to reality, did any of you visited the Ledra St crossing? Turks and Greeks could basically cross the border freely, without a visa. If Cyprus joins Schengen, it has to harmonize its visa policy, forcing Turks to apply for a visa.

This Schengen matter has been floated for 10 years every year, so maybe it is just another PR excercise.

And I might be wrong

It's nto being hypocrite, it's about geopolitics. Might makes right. Every country does what's in their best interest.

I would live in a democractic country, of course.
