You're from Russia, using Interactive Brokers or similar institution.
War starts.
Before your broker close your account, you find an Argentinian utility bill and use photoshop to make it look like you reside there.
Update your account info and live happily ever after, at least financially.

Does this work? Can the institution check if it's real?

A lot of utility companies and banks generate PDFs.

One could use a PDF editor and it comes out absolutely flawless.

this software created milliones of negative tests and vaccination certificates in the last three years - it can surely help with utility bills 🙂

to bypass requests of idiotic companies that still require screenshots of websites, DOM editor in you browsers does a perfect job....

It's not the Companies that's idiotic, it's the system that's and always will be - idiotic.
for all they care, they don't want to turn any kind of money away, they know PDF editors exist, They know Fakeness when they see it, but if it says A and there is no where to prove that it says B (due to privacy policies of certain countries, inefficient governments, Gov offices outside refuse to turn over citizen's data or verify it...etc) they just accept it at face value and they satisfy the KYC/AML BS.

They can't verify with the Argentine utility company, but it is sometimes possible to manually or automatically detect whether a document has been photoshopped. Being a foreign citizen in another country, some institutions follow up with asking for copy of visa or residence permit.

As long as you're over all uninteresting, the only real risk of getting caught here is if they use an automated tool (and someone sees and follows up on the result) and/or you're for some reason worth taking a closer look at.

EU institutions are required to closely assess the residence of Russian national account holders (and risk severe punishments if not), so you might be subject to more scrutiny there. Bank somewhere that's neutral or pro-Russia, and your risks decrease further.

This is the probably the answer to your question.

The moral of the story here is to be good at Photoshop or (possibly) get caught. 🙂

Being good at PS is almost mandatory these days in this shitshow reality we have to live in

What if AFIP gets that information, verifies there is no such taxpayer and asks IB to start withdrawals of 50% punitive taxes?

In theory, they can. But if you aren't dealing with millions of dollars (aka big money), who has the time to go after you? Investigating you costs money. Is the money taken from your account worth enough to pay for that?

for CRS

It's self audit till 200.000$

200.000 - > 1.000.000 they need to look if you really reside there , they will ask utility bills

1.000.000 they should make sure that you have the products you say you are selling, and you are really resident at that address. they will ask you to take a videocall in front of your home if have a different tax residency then the one of your passport.
they will ask videos with you showing your deposit of products you sell ,etc.

Before reaching these thresholds, one should invest in other stuff to keep cash low
If you have big money, hire professionals to take care of this. Having money and losing sleep over this doesn't worth it
