I lived in Germany last year for 1 year and have now moved to Switzerland in the meantime. Now the German tax authorities are demanding 20K euros in taxes - can they reach me in Switzerland or can I just ignore it if I don't go back there again?

I know that banks and anything related to financial security cannot be claimed by the Germans in Switzerland.

And when I deregistered, I stated that I had moved to Portugal.

People have been extradited from Switzerland to Germany for tax offences. Your small fish however and the money owed and interest penalty (0.5% a month) will just be left to build up over time if they can't find you.

If you owe money in EU it can be enforced across entire EU countries under Regulation EU No 655/2014. An EAPO (European account preservation order procedure) can be issued and any accounts you have in EU will be frozen. Now Switzerland is not in EU and I hope you don't maintain any accounts in EU. But you may find yourself in a situation where your name becomes mud in various systems and you will be denied access to banking and EMI's etc within the EU. Also this data will eventually reach Switzerland indirectly as financial systems are very interconnected in Europe via correspondence banking in Euros. Lets say a payment from Europe is heading to you in Switzerland, automated systems checks will show there is an EAPO on you perhaps. I am talking worst case scenarios here btw.

At some point it may come back and bite you and may muddy your name in Switzerland if people were to do background checks on you.

Don't think this will make much difference. It may make sense to just pay or arrange a payment plan with German taxman in end. Not worth it over 20k.

Thank you Martin,

I just got the real letter (only saw a snip) the amount is 80K owed to Denmark who now tries to collect the amount through Germany the tax depth is originated from Denmark and not Germany.

So actually I should contact the Danish Tax office and get some sort of arrangement rather than the German right ?

It is possible to arrange a payment plan with the tax authorities. And you should check with the Danish tax authorities as there is now an opportunity to have your tax debt forgiven if you are unable to pay it. It is worth finding a good solution when it comes to taxes.

Maybe you should have consulted a local lawyer in DK before communicating with them to see what your options are.
