Ethereum network fee at Coinbase $39?

I can send ethereum to another wallet from Exodus and Ledger for almost nothing but from coinbase I get charged $39 in network fees?

How comes it is that hight?

I notice the same, usually the charge is 1 - 5 EUR. Now I have a feeling they charge extra for the service they provide so the network increase their fees because of the hype about Ethereum and the many people investing in this cryptocurrency.

A lot of people are moving all their assets out of Coinbase as they will be reporting all balances and gains to the UK and European governments as of the 31st January 2021.

my guess is they adapt the cost based on the current fees of the network, ethereum fees can go very high and exchange would always pay enough fees to have the transactions be done quickly.
the low fees on your wallet are not going to get processed quickly when the network is congested, like currently we are at the highest since the price went parabolic last few days.

that's among the reasons they are upgrading the network with Eth2.
