How to get the easiest formal tax residency? My country asks me to be tax resident somewhere

Yeah, but at personal level, it's best to not rely on tax treaties at all, and only be a tax resident in one place (or zero). It's a pain to get tax treaties enforced, and deal with incompetent bureaucrats in two countries.

How to get the easiest formal tax residency? My country asks me to be tax resident somewhere

Italy Im familiar with, and in order to register as an Italian abroad (AIRE registry) you have to go to the Italian embassy in the country you moved to, and have some sort of proof of residence - not proof of tax residence though. And it's a one off thing, you dont have to keep proving your...

How to get the easiest formal tax residency? My country asks me to be tax resident somewhere

No, Australia hasn't added a requirement that one needs to be tax resident in some country outside Australia to get out of their tax net. Currently Australia has a few tests including the domicile test, which says that one has to have a permanent abode in some country to no longer be an...

Left the UK, in Dublin, might not move?

UK's modified non-dom (called FIG regime) is only 4 years, the Irish one is for life. But during those 4 years in the UK, one can actually remit funds earned abroad to the UK without tax. That's not possible in Ireland - there you can only remit funds earned before you moved to Ireland tax free.

Left the UK, in Dublin, might not move?

No, Ireland is very straightforward to leave, and as long as you dont transfer over funds from your business to yourself while being a tax resident in Ireland, taxes will be very reasonable. Note that if you are not an Irish citizen, you are non-domicile in Ireland, meaning you pay zero tax to...

    Personal Word from Fred

About traditional Banks vs EMIs. My life time record is that I have had 20 bank accounts in 7 countries, about 2/3 EMIs and 1/3 traditional banks. I have had 1 account closed down and that was a traditional bank in the UAE. And another one was a UK traditional bank (TSB) where I got this...

    Personal Word from Fred

I have a friend living in Argentina who opened an account with Mercury for a US LLC two weeks ago. Took 24 hours. EMIs have gotten a little bit more tricky with the address for US LLC owned by non-US residents, but it's still totally doable. There are still tons of EMIs across the world that...

Moving 6 figs from a country with capital controls

Ah, this is an interesting problem. I live in a third world country myself with capital controls, but my income is from outside the country so I dont have this problem. I do however need to get money into the country for living expenses and investments, so I do p2p with people who need to get...

Moving 6 figures from US LLC to EU

Ok, legally you are liable to pay tax to Italy when you earn it in your US LLC, even if you just keep it there and dont send it anywhere. You may get away with it though, as despite clauses of bilateral reporting exist, in practice US banks and authorities dont report much to foreign countries...

What countries make the most sense Tax Wise for my situaton?

Got more info on this? Which countries have changed, and how exactly? Of the countries I follow more closely, i.e. the Nordics, UK/Ireland and Italy, Im only aware of Italy making recent changes to tax residency rules (besides Norway making the exit tax stricter). Since 2024, Italy has...

Tax resident of nowhere while staying in EU?

No, only had girlfriends in the baltics, never dealt with their legal systems. So probably optimised my experience that way. But the three countries are quite different, have you been in court in Estonia, how was that/what happened?

Tax resident of nowhere while staying in EU?

Fair point, but Estonian authorities arent like dicks. And unlike many other EU countries rules are short and quite clear. They say: "To determine a person's place of residence, it is important that the place of residence would be permanent and lasting, i.e. it must be apparent that the person...

Tax resident of nowhere while staying in EU?

I mean you are legally not even close to come into the tax net in any of the 3 countries in this situation. But yes, sometimes, tax authorities go after you anyway, so key is to avoid the countries with the most aggressive tax authorities like Spain or the Netherlands. And also if you are a...

Tax resident of nowhere while staying in EU?

Well, if the person spends like half the year in France and the other half in Germany, and have homes in both places, then he is playing with fire. But if the person spends like 4 months in Ireland, 4 months in Estonia and the rest in the Czech Republic and the UAE, then it's no problem.

Tax resident of nowhere while staying in EU?

One cant generalise across all EU countries like that. They all have different rules for what's considered in their tax net and different enforcement. Some countries mainly have plain days tests like Estonia or Ireland, others have significant ties like the nordics (excluding Norway that is...

Cyprus or UAE for me? (Low income btw...)

The UAE has two different tax residency certificates, one for domestic use that only require a 90 day stay, and one "international" for double taxation purposes requiring "the individual to be physically present in the UAE for more than 183 days in a 12 month period". I guess it's the latter you...
