If you enjoy Africa then more power to you, I just don't see what the appeal would be if budgeting isn't a concern and not a place I would feel safe raising kids in. Sure they are tied to Europe geographically but they're not EU members so their hands aren't tied in the same way.

Both can be true at the same time. While yes, if the US tells EU to jump they will ask "how high?" but they have cracked down on basically all european tax havens and will force immigrant quotas like we've seen with Bulgaria.
