“Swiss based”
Enough for me to move on.

it's just marketing
funny how the same word has totally contradictory connotations - for an average Joe "Swiss" means something safe and flawless for you not so much... 😉

it's just another signal... not a tool for us but definitely positive thing that they made it part of the proton services and designed it the way they did

If Proton really cared about privacy they would make an XMR wallet. Not a BTC wallet tied to your email address that you download from Play store rof/%

Why would i change to proton for my crypto?

because it's waaaay better then holding it on binance or coinbase like millions of other people?

because you for some reason trust proton with your mail and vpn for years and don't feel confident/motivated enough to buy a hw wallet?

many reasonable scenarios... which doesn't mean it's always an optimal solution

That's the point. Instead of explaining why they are good, they rely on the average Joe's misconception of Switzerland as a state, which is nothing more than another satellite of the EU.
How can you trust a state, any state, and in particular one that is subjugated to the EU?
In short, they mislead potential customers with an old cliche, thus they are untrustworthy.

Yes and way worse than having your own wallet. But many people are unable to maintain good opsec and would simply lose the keys as soon as their grandmother form Nigeria calls. As a result they revert to third parties to safegurad the keys.

Btc solves this. Enough said.

Yes, it would solve THAT problem. But looking at how we have been fooled by some rumormonger:

got you ALL derailed from your life and projects by simply logging in with a new account, dropping a BS lie (nobody knows I use OCT, except other OCT members) and accomplished his goal!

If that daft disabled and displaced anencephalic can do this to a group of bright guys.... I don't know... you guys have scared the living bejesus out of me.

I have serious doubts that not many here would fall victim of some bs story, making them install some cowed...

My opinion is that this service is not particularly interesting or useful to us users here at OCT.

On the other hand, it is better if crypto-beginners/average Joes are partially-self-custodying with the Proton wallet and not holding their crypto at centralized exchanges ”“ well, to us it is not important whether they lose their keys or their crypto, but it's important to them, and I do not think that Proton would create a particularly bad service.

Swissness is still a strategic marketing term and Swiss sells.

If I had to choose a wallet based on trust on a third party, I'm not sure I would use crypto at all, and I would stick to fiat. Stored with a big financial institution with a long history of successful and efficient money laundering and fraud facilitation.

but you're not a target group 😉
and this proton wallet is non-custodial (while I understand it doesn't change much on your stance)

I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would put their crypto in the control of an organization (who are arms of the government). Just use your own wallet, it's not that damn onerous!

I like how the button on that page is "Protect my Bitcoin". More like "Endanger my Bitcoin"

Exactly. If they cared about privacy, they would not peddle BTC wallets. Proton sells snake oil privacy. They have reported users to governments many times upon subpoena. Decentralized is the only way to ensure privacy. iPhone is another snake oil seller, they locate you to within inches and grassed the Jan 6 protestors to the government.

I'm still learning about this. Which exchange/ wallet would you recommend for full control/privacy and how would you buy/store XMR?

Trezor+Tor for storage
Exodus or any other decent wallet you like for quick spending.
If you need exchanges, always ask friends to do you a favor.
