Hi all, can anyone say why its beneficial to live in a country with a DTA as originally from Canada, wihtout mention of double taxation itself? Like, if I live in Panama for example, and Canada sees this on my non resident returns (I own Canadian real estate), could they easily just deem me as Canadian tax resident because I live in a country that has no treaty? I would love to live in some of these non treaty countries with territorial or no tax but I am scared then I am defenceless against Canada if they try to claw money from me because there is no treaty governing wehether I am a tax resident of Canada OR that country

Tax treaties are useful if you're in a situation where you may end up having a tax obligation in the foreign country and/or tax obligation in both. If you don't have any tax obligations in Canada, the presence of a tax treaty is probably a non-issue.
