Serbia yeeting freelancers?

I just read in random comments on YT that Serbia has supposedly demanded freelancers to pay social security and possibly some taxes, backtracking 5 years. What's the scoop? I know NC promotes Serbia quite a bit for living, real estate and to hire people. But this is a really big red flag.

Government is probably broke, so they are trying to collect as much money as possible.

Btw, it's still the safest and cheapest country in eastern europe to live and reside.

seems the government has been ignoring the situation for over a decade and now they want to punish the people retroactively for the government's mistakes instead of updating the tax law to be up to day with the 21st century.

Unfortunately, the U.S. did something similar in 2017 with retained earnings in offshore CFCs, earnings that sometimes went back decades. A court recently upheld the validity of the law.

Governments will continue to become more predatory as they seek to pay for unsustainable debt for their socialist welfare states. Just wait until interest rates rise and governments try to service all that debt at higher interest rates!
