Just a hypothetical conversation I had earlier in the week.

Taking the UK as an example;

Tourist is allowed to visit UK 6 months a year based on a normal tourist on arrival visa.

Tax residency rules says that if there are enough ties, person can already be resident in as low as 45 days.

So you could be tax resident in a country, yet not legally allowed to be a permanent resident?

Yes some double tax treaties aside etc....

Tax residency has nothing to do with permanent residency.
Look into Asian countries, can be‌ very difficult to become PR, while tax residency has totally different requirements.

Not sure about UK but⁢ I guess you can accidentally trigger tax residency in some countries if you stay for︀ months and they find out you work from your phone/laptop. Not sure if any country︁ go after foreigners for this for now.

It is normally quite hard to find those guys. But if during some⁠ other investigation this turns up, they most likely will chase up on you.

Yes I think they are more likely to go after citizens or business owners⁠ in the country, much easier to track and threat to ruin their lives.
Maybe in⁤ a more dystopian future they can track this better and go after foreigners who knows.⁣

I think you are confusing permanent residency with just "residency", but you can absolutely become⁠ tax resident on a tourist visa, for example, yes.

And there have been cases where⁤ the tax authorities were demanding tax for unlicensed or illegal activities even.

So they can⁣ tax you as an illegal immigrant and then throw you into jail or deport you.⁢ The two things have nothing to do with each other.
