Being British, we can just move there and generally have someone in the family for a link to get citizenship via.

Sure, and if you are a broke EU citizen you can go there and enjoy social welfare. But if you are a wealthy Chinese or Russian you are no longer welcome to bring money into the country

Brutal. Socialist states in all their "beauty" - "let's all be poor and hate the‌ rich foreigners".
Wondering if or when the Cyprus will be pushed to the limit -‍ they already scrapped the passport program, will the golden visa follow?

All of this makes sense. It cannot be that housing goes to some dubioulsly rich‌ Chinese while locals have to suffer.
Portugals' program was born during the Euro crisis. This‍ crisis is no longer and PT is doing fine. Moreover, the overall contribution to the countries' economy is minimal since most of these rich golden visa holders do not pay⁤ taxes in PT.

Rest assured, the remaining programs in Europe will all be closed in⁣ the not so distant future. They do not make sense anymore.
Interestingly, even countries like⁢ Turkey and the Philippines are tightening on these programs.

I actually doubt it, but time‌ will tell. Unlike Portugal and Ireland, Spain has no tax incentives for newcomers with money.‍ So unless they want to completely ruin the economics of Costas - they will keep the "golden visa" and keep milking British and other non-eu guys.

Comparing to the locals‌ - yes, they have relatively big amounts of cash (usually retirement money) to splurge around.‍
