Microsoft outage live updates: Worldwide travel and banking hit after cybersecurity update causes IT chaos (e.g.)
(Simply said, one fucked up update for Crowdstrike security sw for MS Windows made millions of MS Windows controlled computers, MS Azure cloud included, unusable. A manual intervention on-site seems to be needed to repair.)


Are you affected? (I am not, to prevent questions.)

Lesson: Do not use Microsoft systems; do not use cloud (as possible).

I saw this also and just looks like an innocent update release that went wrong‌ - worse than some Nvidia driver updates that crash your whole PC also smi(&%. Luckily‍ I don't use anything MS related and not seen anyone I know affected by it.⁠

Then I looked into co-founder of Crowdstrike 😉. Again totally unrelated but I am sure⁤ people will be like ca#"!

if nothing else then‍ this event will hopefully make people realize that so-called antivirus software is a way bigger⁠ problem than the virus threat itself

I know of a company that currently has about 30k Windows endpoints down. Fortunately they‌ are able to perform the workaround, but this has to be done manually... for each‍ device.

The coming weeks will not be enjoyable for IT departments managing CrowdStrike.

By the way, they‍ are taken out routinely. This has been happening since I remember as a teenager in⁠ the '80s. Mainstream media does NOT publicize them. This one happened right after 9/11 in⁤ Zug, so it was lost on most people. The Zug massacre took place on 27⁣ September 2001 in the city of Zug (Canton of Zug, Switzerland) in the canton's parliament.⁢ Friedrich Leibacher shot dead 14 people before killing himself. Leibacher was armed with a civilian︀ version of a Stgw 90, a SIG Sauer pistol, a pump-action shotgun, and a revolver,︁ and wore a homemade police vest. In the years before the massacre, Leibacher drew attention︂ to himself through repeated lawsuits. These were dismissed, so he assumed he was being persecuted︃ by the state and felt he had to resort to violence. In the aftermath of︄ the shooting, gun laws in Switzerland were tightened and changes in security were enacted.

It reminds me the Nanterre massacre (Nanterre massacre - Wikipedia) from (roughly) the same time. It is interesting that this massacre︅ was paralleled with the Toulouse and Montauban shootings (Toulouse and Montauban shootings - Wikipedia︆) ten years later, however it had no similar roots, IMO.
